Multimodal Transportation: Definition, Challenges & Solutions

In this era where people’s everyday tasks are being fulfilled online, some things can only be done offline. One of them is transportation in the logistics industry. Transportation needs to be extremely robust these days because of the increasing demand for quick and efficient delivery at the doorsteps of the consumer.

In this article, we will talk about the culmination of transportation in logistics which is known as multimodal transportation.

What is Multimodal Transportation?

Multimodal transportation involves the utilization of various transportation modes to deliver freight from one place to another.

For example, to ship items across different countries via sea routes, one needs to use ships or planes. The same applies when one wants to ship items across continents. If one wishes to transport items within the country, then one can use truck carriers or involve rail carriers.

So, there are three modes of transportation i.e. sea, land and air routes and collectively they come under the category of multimodal transportation.

There’s a single multimodal transport operator or provider that manages multimodal transport. This provider works with smaller carriers or contractors to get things done, but for the shipper who chooses multimodal transport, it’s still a one-agreement process.

What is Intermodal Transportation?

To fully understand multimodal transportation, we also need to understand intermodal transportation.

Intermodal transportation deals with the coordination of multiple modes of transportation. The only difference between intermodal and multimodal transportation is that intermodal transportation deals with multiple carriers and contracts while shipping the same freight. Whereas, multimodal transport has a single contractual agreement throughout the shipment of the freight.

The main benefit of intermodal transportation is that it is cheaper than multimodal transportation but at the same time, it is time-consuming since there needs to be multiple levels of negotiation through various contracts while shipping freight.

Benefits of Multimodal Transportation

Along with being significant, it comes with its advantages.

  • Clear Communication: Since multimodal transportation follows a single contract throughout the delivery process of the freight, it becomes much easier for the stakeholders to communicate effectively.
  • Security and Accountability: Since there’s only one agent who is responsible for the delivery of the freight, it comes on top of intermodal one when it comes to its accountability and security.
  • Meeting Deadlines: Meeting deadlines can be easily ensured because of one agent being responsible for the freight delivery

Multimodal Transportation Challenges:

Surely, multimodal transportation holds a significant importance but it does not come without its challenges.

Following are some of the challenges faced during multimodal transportation:

  • Huge Amount of Paperwork: Despite the advancements in technology, many logistical authorities still rely on good old paperwork which can be cumbersome at most times.
  • Infrastructure and Coordination: All modes work under different regulatory authorities. This creates a problem in the coordination and maintenance of infrastructure.
  • Natural Disasters: No one can stand against mother nature and this fact stands true even for the logistics industry. Natural disasters can not only delay the orders but also damage the freight in transit.
  • Regulatory and Legal Issues: Multimodal transportation requires adhering to diverse regulatory frameworks which can turn out to be kind of a hassle. Also, there are several legal issues since the modal requires cross-country transportation.
  • Technology Integration: To embed various kinds of technologies like virtual freight monitoring and maintenance can come in super handy but it comes with a lot of initial costs and requires a lot of maintenance.
  • Environmental Impact: Usually these transport modes run on tons of fuel that causes a lot of harm to the environment. For now, the damage caused by the fuel is inevitable because crude oil is the only abundant resource for vehicular transportation.

Multimodal Transportation Solutions:

To solve the above-mentioned challenges, there are some innovative solutions which can be undertaken to make the most out of multimodal transportation.

So, here are the solutions in no particular order:

  • Going Paperless: Leveraging methods like e-sign and online photo identification process can save time and resources upto a huge extent.
  • Smart Transportation Systems: Smart technologies like predictive analysis, predictive modelling, and autonomous vehicles can be used to optimize traffic flow and enhance overall efficiency.
  • Intermodal Hubs: To streamline cargo transfers, reduce handling time, and enhance collaboration among stakeholders, intermodal hubs can come in handy for everyone in the logistics industry.
  • Public-Private Partnerships: Collaborations between government bodies and private companies can lead to better resource allocation, investment opportunities, and improved infrastructure development. This can also ease the legal proceedings to carry out cross-country logistical operations.
  • Sustainable Practices: To reduce the environmental impact of crude oil via transportation, sustainable practices should be encouraged. These can include the generation of eco-friendly energies like electricity, hydro-powered fuel, solar power, etc.

Conclusion:

To carry out multimodal transportation as smoothly as possible, it is imperative to incorporate smart solutions to the diverse challenges that people in the logistics industry face. This is important because no matter how much technology advances, things will require to be transported from one place to another.
